In your community

Smiling family3663 people in depots and offices around the country are active in your local community.

Here's what they've been doing:

Abingdon depot
- Gave presentations to local schools about how a large business manages and minimises its environmental impacts and recycling initiatives at the depot. Schools visited the depot, to see the recycling operation and a vehicle.

Basingstoke depot - Created a pleasant seated garden area with plants at a hospice near Salisbury.

Basingstoke does a lot of fund raising through dress down days and sponsored activities, and asks their two adopted schools (one an able bodied school and the other for handicapped children) to provide them with a 'wish list'. Members of the depot's Environmental Committee purchase some of these items from the lists using the funds raised and present them to the school. Items have included TV, photo frames, heavy duty shelving and digital cameras.

Birmingham depot - Donated £200 to restore several stretches of the Lichfield and Hatherton canals. Restored a fishing pond with platforms from which to fish.

Bristol depot - Liaised with local schools to raise awareness of the need to protect and consider the environment. They sponsored a competition where school children made models and painted pictures and were presented with prizes donated by the depot.

Dundonald depot - For the past three years Dundonald depot have been raising funds for Ayshire Central Baby care unit. So far they have donated a total of £3,400 which was raised mainly by our Christmas raffles and fun weeks within the depot. This money is used for specialist equipment the unit requires in order to offer the best treatment available for babies born prematurely.

Harlow depot - In the warehouse, bags of sugar occasionally become damaged and spilt. Instead of disposing of this to the landfill, the depot sweep up the sugar and store it in a container and donate it to a local bee keeper who is very grateful.

Manchester depot - Work with environmental charity Groundwork. Using the business services of Groundwork Manchester, the depot has been working alongside other businesses to develop Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001).

Sevenoaks depot - Shred office paper which is bagged and taken to a local animal rescue centre.

Southampton depot - Gave time and use of mobile freezer equipment to a local schools summer fete to sell ice cream. All proceeds were donated to the school.

Stevenage offices - Donate printer and toner cartridges to local schools.

Wakefield depot - support and sponsor environmental charity Groundwork's WasteWorks project. The project educated hundreds of primary school children in the Wakefield area about recycling and reusing whilst having fun and involved a visit to a landfill site. Ian Banks, DGM at Wakefield depot is now a Director on the Groundwork board. The work and support that the depot has done for the community and the fact that 3663 is currently implementing ISO 14001 has meant that Wakefield depot has recently won a prestigious award specifically acknowledging these achievements.
